INTRODUCTION :

The NSS was launched on September 24, 1969 in 37 universities covering all states by the Government of India. It aims at developing a sense of participation in nation building through social work among students. Thus, NSS a mission of youth for nation building. NSS plays a vital role to make youth to be aware of a society in which they live and its problem Besides, it also makes them aware of their duties responsibilities towards a society. Thus NSS activity have deep meaning that youth for country. It is call of Country to inspire its youth for its overall development. Of course NSS also plays attention to individual development of volunteers too. This deepens understanding of the social environment and enrich their personality through actual participation in day to day life of the society.

The College students actively participate in social service activities leading to their overall development. The National Service Scheme (NSS) is effectively run in the college. Through this scheme, the institution undertakes various extension activities in the college campus and adopted villages. At present, the strength of the NSS unit is of 290 volunteers. Every year the college conducts 7 days camp in the adopted village, and takes up cleanliness, village survey, water conservation, beach cleaning and other constructive works. During the last five years, the NSS Department has organized camps in adopted villages Adeli, Vetora and Waingani Ta.Vengurla. Several of the noteworthy activities were carried out by NSS volunteers, which include tree plantation, water conservation through digging of contour trenches, digging of pits for construction of toilets in the village, repairing paths and roads. The impact is, the villages have got new green coverage, increased groundwater level, clean roads and surroundings. Additionally, the villagers learned the significance of rainwater harvesting. Thus, the camps and awareness programs have improved their understanding about the various social issues.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF NATIONAL SERVICE SHEME:

The aim of the National Services Scheme is "to develop personality of students through community service." This aim is achieved by enabling the students to :

1) Understand the community in which they work.

2) Understand themselves of relation to their community.

3) Identify the needs and problems of the community in the solution of which they can be involved.

4) Develop among themselves a sense of social and civil responsibility.

5) Apply their education in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.

6) Develop competence required for group - living and sharing responsibilities.

7) Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.

8) Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.

9) Develop capacity to meet emergencies and disasters.

10) Practice national integration.

MOTTO : 'NOT ME BUT YOU'

The motto of NSS is 'Not Me But You'. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on welfare of society as a whole. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other man's point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings.

N.S.S. SYMBOL:

The symbol of the National Service Scheme is based on the 'Rath' wheel of the Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. This giant wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. It also stands for the dynamism and progressive outlook of youth.
